This is the last chapter of this book, so tomorrow we will being with…
1 Peter 5
Christian Life in God’s Care
1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
“Not by constraint…not for filthy lucre” – educate people about Jesus Christ but don’t force them to listen and don’t do it for self-gain.
3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
“Neither as being lords over God’s heritage” – don’t act like you are better than anyone else just because you are more knowledgeable about God.
4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
“Chief Shepherd” – Christ. When He returns, He will reward those who have served as shepherds under Him –
“…I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be” (Rev 22:12).
Some will receive rewards, but most will receive punishment.
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
“Exalt you in due time” – God’s help will always come at just the right time.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
“Be vigilant” – always be prepared and ready for the evil acts of the devil, as Paul had said, wear the full armor of God (Eph 12:11-17).
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
“By Silvanus” – Silvanus (Silas) may be have been the bearer of the letter to its destination. He may also have been a scribe who recorded what Peter dictated or who aided, as an informed and intelligent secretary, in the phrasing of Peter’s thoughts.
13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
“Marcus my son” – Peter regards Mark with such warmth and affection that he calls him his son. It is possible that Peter had led Mark to Christ (see 1 Tim:2).
14 Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
I Was a Paid Hypocrite
“For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery” (Job 15:34).
“And in the morning, It will be foul weather today: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (Matt 16:3).
1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, especially one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.
There are many good examples of hypocrites, but one that is known worldwide is Oprah Winfrey and she is a hypocrite in more than one way. For example:
She calls herself a Christian but does not follow the laws of God. If she said she was spiritual only then she would not be a hypocrite, but she would still go to hell. But since she claims to be a Christian she will be a hypocrite going to hell.
Oprah tells the world how heart stricken she is about the poverty so many have to endure. Yet, according to Forbes, she is worth 2.9 billion. If she was concerned about the welfare of others she’d do something about it.
1175–1225; Middle English ipocrite < Old French < Late Latin hypocrita < Greek hypokritḗs a stage actor, hence one who pretends to be what he is not, equivalent to hypokrī́ ( nesthai )
Deceiver, Dissembler, Pretender, Pharisee, Oprah, Warren, Obama, Graham, Martin Luther King Jr.
Hypocrisy can be a dangerous slippery slope controlled with the parasites of pride, greed, selfishness, and insecurities.
It is very unlikely that the non-believer can break away from its grip of death, but with Jesus Christ all things are possible.
“But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matt 19:26).
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil 4:13).
“I Was a Paid Hypocrite”
Actor Who Called His Own TV Show “Filth”
Explains Why He Abandoned Hollywood
for His Christian Faith
Former “Two and a Half Men” star Angus T. Jones surprised viewers in November 2012 when he announced that he had embraced Christianity and was struggling with the starring television role he had played for nearly a decade.
Now, he’s speaking out about his faith and explaining why he eventually left the comedy behind, calling himself a “paid hypocrite” for continuing to work on the show even though he wasn’t comfortable with its content.
Jones, who played the character Jake Harper in the sitcom, was still an active “Two and a Half Men” cast member when he called the program “filth” and announced that he no longer wanted to be a part of it. He ended up apologizing over his comments, though he later left the cast in 2013.
One year after exiting, Jones is going to school in Colorado and speaking to church audiences about his experience getting closer to God and leaving Hollywood.
Interview with Jacqueline Crea
It has been about a year since Angus T. Jones left the show “Two and a Half Men,” after playing the character Jake for nearly 10 years.
His leaving was controversial. In an interview he blasted the sitcom and asking people to stop watching it.
Jones claimed he wasn’t living the life he wanted as a Christian. He found himself rediscovering his faith and that was making it difficult to play his role in the hit show.
The Pharisees had that problem.
“But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in” (Matt 23:13).
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone” (Matt 23:23).
“It was difficult for me to be on the show and be part of something that was making light of topics in our world where there are really problems for a lot of people,” said Jones.
This is a big deal.
If Oprah can’t keep the weight off, who can.
* Access to the best trainers in the world,
* Access to the best nutritional gurus in the world,
* Access to America’s doctor, Dr. Oz,
* A fully equipped home gym(s),
* A personal chef,
* Access to the best selling spiritual gurus,
* Access to the most popular personal coaches,
* Access to the psychiatrists who have devoted their practices to weight loss,
* Access to the President-Elect, and,
* More money than God.
With all of this equipment and money and advice and healthy eating and healthy living, how could she gain 40 lbs. in one year?
Well, according to Ms. Winfrey herself:
Is Oprah a Big Fat Hypocrite?
What I’ve learned this year is that my weight issue isn’t about eating less or working out harder, or even about a malfunctioning thyroid.
It’s about my life being out of balance, with too much work and not enough play, not enough time to calm down. I let the well run dry.
Here’s another thing this past year has been trying to teach me:
I don’t have a weight problem—I have a self-care problem that manifests through weight.
As my friend Marianne Williamson shared with me, “Your overweight self doesn’t stand before you craving food. She’s craving love.”
Well if it isn’t the overeating making her fat, then maybe she is correct and Jesus is wrong, that He isn’t the only way to heaven?
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (Jn 14:6 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ).
I’m going to believe what Jesus says, not Oprah. What about you?“I was a paid hypocrite because I wasn’t OK with it and I was still doing it.”
So he left the show after his contract ended. But in hindsight he says, he could’ve approached it differently. He admits he feels guilty for openly criticizing the show and creator Chuck Lorre.
“That’s his like baby and I just totally insulted his baby and to that degree I am apologetic but otherwise I don’t regret saying what I said,” said Jones.
These days he’s going to school in Colorado, growing a beard and spending time with the World Harvest Outreach Church in Houston.
Saturday, he told his story to parishioners about how he found God. He’s become a close follower of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
The Seventh Day Adventist preaches that they are the church of the Bible.
The following quote comes from their Church Manual:
Baptismal vow—Candidates for baptism or those being received into fellowship by profession of faith shall affirm their acceptance of the doctrinal beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the presence of the church or other properly appointed body. The minister or elder should address the following questions to the candidate(s)…
The Seventh Day Adventist church was born in New Hampshire, in 1844. The church of the Bible was established in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost (the first day of the week) in the same year Jesus died and was raised from the dead (see Acts 2).
The Seventh Day Adventists have their headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Church of the Bible has its headquarters in heaven, because that is where Jesus, the head of the church, is (Eph 1:22-23; Col 3:1).
The Seventh Day Adventists say that the Sabbath Day is on Saturday. I agree because the calendar that we live by today says that the first day of the week is Sunday.
The disciples met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7), and according to scholars and their calendar, that was Monday, if so then the Sabbath would be Sunday.
Yet, we don’t know if Monday even existed with Ancient Man, i.e., Adam and Eve.
“He really considers his relationship with God and what he’s putting out in the atmosphere to be a lot more important than his reputation in Hollywood.
Angus, I’m not sure really cares a whole lot about being an actor or being well known in that regard,” said Dr. James R. Doggett Sr., pastor at World Harvest Outreach Church.
Jones recited a few scriptures from the Bible, noting he is still actively learning and studying his faith.
“I really want to come into the light because I know that is where the healing is and I’ve seen God do amazing things,” said Jones.
He may have put acting on the back burner for now, but he hasn’t completely ruled it out.
“There’s a few different productions that like do kind of Bible-based stories. Stuff like that,” said Jones.
His time away from the spotlight, he said is the most rewarding. “He’s part of Houston. He goes to church here in Houston. And by the way he loves Texas. He was born in Austin,” said Doggett.
Jones visits different churches and ministries around the country and will probably be back to visit Texas to share his story of how he went from Hollywood sets to church pews, and that’s where he plans to stay.
Hypocrisy can be a slow but dangerous slippery slope, as we can see happened to Angus Jones. Another example is Bill Gates and this has nothing to do with the fact that he’s an atheist.
In 1994, Gates created the “William H. Gates Foundation,” which focused on global health.
In 1997, Gates read this article in the New York Times, “For Third World, Water is Still a Deadly-Drink” by Nicholas D. Kristof.
Gates then took his first trip to India for the foundation, administering oral polio vaccine to kids. Sounds good so far, but…
Also, in 1976, he and Melinda created the “Gates Library Foundation,” which worked to bring public access computers with Internet connections to libraries in the United States.
Its name changed to the “Gates Learning Foundation” in 1999 to reflect its focus on ensuring that low-income minority students are prepared for college and have the means to attend.
In 2000, to increase efficiency and communication, the two groups merged into the “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.”
Seventeen years ago Gates was trying to save lives, today he’s killing babies.
According to the directly above article, “Some 2.9 billion people – 66 percent of the population in the third world – have no access to a toilet, not even a decent pit latrine.”
Below is a list of the organizations or people trying to help these people out:
* Africare, 440 R Street N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001
* CARE, 151 Ellis Street, Atlanta, Ga. 30335,
* Childreach, 155 Plan Way, Warwick, R.I. 02886,
* Interaction (an umbrella organization for about 150 groupsworking around the world), 1717 Massachusetts Avenue N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036,
* International Rescue Committee, 122 East 42d Street, New York, N.Y. 10017,
* Save the Children, 54 Wilton Road, Westport, Conn. 06880,
* World Vision, 919 West Huntington Drive, Monrovia, Calif. 91016.
That is 2.9 billion people suffering daily, the same amount of money that Oprah is worth. According to Forbes, Gates is worth 76 billion. Yet, you don’t see their name in the above list.
To all people, especially those that get tripped up by the grubby hands of hypocrisy, to remember the words of Jesus Christ:
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess” (Matt 23:25).
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness” (Matt 23:27).
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a presence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation” (Matt 23:14).
“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves” (Matt 23:15).
